A very common complaint I have been seeing from players and reviewers alike is that the story of Destiny is too short, and too basic.
I think this actually stems from poor understanding of what the destiny story actually is, so I will attempt to clarify things to the best of my knowledge.
I think the primary problem is that Bungie have not properly communicated how the legend of Destiny is going to go down. Here is what I have surmised from a bit of reading between the lines.
1. It is your legend, but you are one of many. You are not the only one out there fighting the good fight, and If the story delved deeply into one guardians struggle, and puts all the credit on that one guardian, then it belittles the efforts of all the others. Besides, if thousands or millions of guardians are completing the same missions, and they are things that could only be done once (lore wise) , it becomes very flimsy very fast. This is why the majority of story revolves around things that are useful but not totally game changing, and things that could technically be done by multiple guardians in multiple times, all working towards one goal.
2. This is the one that bugs me the most, but sadly it is also the most common. People say the story was too short, and ended in a disappointing fashion. What we need to consider is that the story ISN'T FINISHED!
The story we are following is an episodic one, and I don't just mean it will be followed up with a sequel like halo etc. It seems evident to me that the story is being released in parts, the first being the one we saw at release, and the second being the Queen's Wrath event coming up in the next month. I'm guessing that by the end of destiny's initial run (my guess the first year, or maybe 2) we will see plenty more of the traveller, the darkness, and our little dinklebot.
3. This is probably the most valid complaint I have seen, and that is that it isn't fair to release a game in which you have to buy dlc to finish the story. I can't fault the logic here, but my concern is that people are jumping the gun. It's entirely possible that all of the episodic content coming that pertains to the main story will be free, and the paid expansions will be extra side stories, or related tales, just like in games like borderlands, WoW, etc. I suspect that Queens Wrath is the first of these free prices of story content, but only time will tell on this one.
Hopefully for anyone concerned, this should give a slightly more positive perspective to consider.
What do you all think though, am I horribly wrong in my assumptions?
