From today's Bungie info update:
Q: Seriously, how long will it take(a Raid) , I have a life.
Luke: Because we store your progress in a given week, you don't need to clear the activity in one-go. Your group could simply make your way into the Vault and call it an evening, reconvene later in the week and pick up where you left off.
However, your progress for the week is reset each Tuesday at the Weekly Reset.
So really? If we can't do it in a week, it resets? That's fine maybe if you have the same 6 people playing on the same raid every night - but is that a realistic thing? ( I'm seriously asking, not being sarcastic)

Weekly resets are normal for Raid, initially it can be tight but after you get the instance down you can knock it out in a few hours (of course that may take a few weeks... months...)

This is 100% correct. Every "raid" or major "instances" have requirements to get into, and for that there is a certain difficulty, with that difficulty there are certain rewards. To make sure this process is as fair as it can me there are weekly resets for rewards. If there were no resets Group A could theoretically clear the instance 10 times a day and be super geared compared to those that can't clear. This helps balance. Most raids don't have save points either, usually you have to do it in one sitting, it's nice with destiny you can get to a point and finish the next day.
