OK guys, I never got into MMO's at all.
How do you beat a raid that takes 16 hours to finish? Is there a team leader that can pause and save your progress when someone has to leave? Can you then "swap out" fireteam members and keep going if you're the leader? Or if you're just on the fire team?
Please tell me that you don't have to beat a raid like that all in one sitting. I'm too old for that - although I have been known to play a new game for 10-12 hours at a time if it's REALLY REALLY good. (Read GTAV or Skyrim )

16 hours?! I've never come across anything like that - but then I'm tight and only play free to play mmos.
Where's your source on this? I'd like to see what they think is so awesome that they want to trap you for so long.

From what I've read and heard via interviews its hovering in the 3hr + range (could take longer) An old school WoW raid could be done in blocks and would give a "soft save" after each major boss defeat which battling up to that point and the boss itself could be 2hrs+ (if things didn't go smoothly then buckle up for an all night affair). You could have 4-6 bosses per raid instance which would resent once a week so an overall 10+hr raid isn't unheard of. Now being that they don't want matchmaking and they expect your raid group to be tight-nit and its their first raid, I would Think they wouldn't want it taking much longer than 4hrs if you took your time. They did say that on normal you could beat it in an hour. "EDIT": I couldn't find the article or vid again where they say that normal could be knocked out this quick so I could totally have imagined this www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/30/destiny-the-endgame-is-only-the-beginning-ign-first Now he's saying the Raids start at lvl 25, the core cap is 20 so whatever it is we need to do to hit 25 will need to be done before we are "supposed" to be able to run this. Now in the article itself it does say right out to "get comfortable for a couple hours" www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-af4Ee78coHere is a rather informative breakdown of a lot of their post 20 content. Hope this helps (sorry if I rambled on a bit)

it has been said that Bungie invited a top group to test the Destiny raid, vault of glass. after 16 hours, they gave up because they couldn't finish it. what wasn't said was if that was 16 hours playing straight through, or if that was over several days. Most likely over several days, I cant imagine anyone sitting for 16 hours playing one raid. and it doesn't say if there were several restarts or anything like that..... But, if this is true, this should tell you how hard this raid will be.

Blazen beat me to it. That's what I read and I couldn't imagine a 16 hour run on one mission. I like video games and all, but .....

Huzah Found what I had been looking for. Per Luke Smith's attempt to justify no matchmaking he does say;
"I expect Hard mode to take longer. Once your group learns the encounters, you will be able to get through the Raid significantly faster than 3 hours."
So taking this down on Normal seems to be doable in under 2 if on Hard geared up shouldn't take more than 3 if you know all the fights and have the proper gear sets (element types and such).

Most likely over several days, I cant imagine anyone sitting for 16 hours playing one raid. and it doesn't say if there were several restarts or anything like that..... But, if this is true, this should tell you how hard this raid will be. It has been said, but has it been proven? A lot of people on Bungie.net seem to be using this as some sort of an argument, for example that one small-minded elitist whose "end-argument" against raid matchmaking was basically "an elite group couldn't beat the raid in 16 hours". I saw Bungie's Urk confirm the test run on neogaf, but there was nothing about the group itself. Assuming a lot of things follows 1. The group is said (by internet) to be "top guild", but what the heck are they a "top guild" in? If they are top guild in an MMORPG, they can't be expected to tackle a shooter game's content. Equally if they are a top guild in an FPS game, would they know how to handle different content? Most FPS games pit you against other players in little-diversity-available online matches. 2. Even if we assumed the group of testers was skilled in FPS games and MMORPGs alike, they wouldn't have Destiny experience. Bungie let them try the raid for 16 hours but did they get to learn the game first? Surely their experience wouldn't match that of an equally skilled player who has been leveling their character for 20 levels AND then gearing up until they can even enter the Vault of Glass. That's a lot of time learning the use of each ability from the ground up and learning & gearing your character to suit your needs. Being thrown with a preset can't help the tryout's difficulty. I'd expect that average-level groups will have no trouble getting through the first raid with a few weeks of trying at the most, honestly. By average I mean like random teams of people built by just picking up GTs and PSN IDs on the forum with little caution, who of course would utilize voice chat though.
